Conduit
A conversation between father and daughter 1955 - 1970. Philosophy behind it is; Prior to the technological developments that have taken place in the last 25 years, communication over distance was limited. There was the element of delay in time the sending with the receiving. Cultural perspectives were more isolated with less understanding of different view points.
This work represents the communication between my father and myself that was restricted to postcards sent from exotic places with colourful images on the front. The written communication was compartmentalised into brief statements that didn't require an answer with the text deciphered for me by my mother, these were then placed in an old chocolate box as treasures. Words were never a major part of our relationship with my father, his love being demonstrated in later years by exquisite pieces of jewellery that he created for his family out of gold and silver. Ironic perhaps is that his role in the Armed Forces as an Electrical Engineer included the development and maintenance of the communication systems. Copper is a conductor.
